Company focus

EX-Fusion is a Japan-based company developing technologies for laser-driven fusion energy. Its published company overview identifies Kazuki Matsuo as CEO and founder and describes ambitions to apply its laser capabilities in manufacturing, semiconductors, biomedical technology, environmental applications and aerospace. The long-term power-plant ambition and these adjacent applications should be considered separately: a useful laser technology does not by itself demonstrate electricity from fusion. Repeated operation is the engineering challenge

The company’s research explanation uses a fast-ignition reactor concept as a reference. Fuel targets would need to enter the chamber repeatedly, be tracked and be illuminated accurately; energy would then have to be recovered through a surrounding blanket and thermal system. This is an engineering sequence for a prospective plant, rather than a description of a plant already supplying electricity. EX-Fusion: target injection and laser tracking research

What has been demonstrated

EX-Fusion reports a proof-of-principle target-handling and laser-tracking system developed with the Graduate School for the Creation of New Photonics Industries. It drops one-millimeter stainless-steel dummy targets ten times per second, predicts their position using optical measurements and adjusts laser pointing. The published account reports operation for at least two hours. The targets are test objects, so this result must not be relabeled repeated fusion ignition. For international readers, the relevant distinction is between optical tracking performance, repeated fusion reactions and net plant electricity. Later milestones and industrial applications

The source Japanese profile also records a later announcement on 1 July 2025: at its Hamamatsu research facility, EX-Fusion reported repeated laser irradiation of surrogate fuel at 10 Hz and sustained plasma production using its own target-delivery and control systems. This was not a claim of ten fusion ignitions per second or net electricity generation. The announced next objective was continuous neutron generation for more than an hour, requiring improvements in power, targeting and heat removal. Surrogate-fuel experiment and next objective

In March 2025 the company opened an applied laser-control research base at Kyoto University Katsura Venture Plaza. Its service offering includes consulting, processing-system development, component sales and sample processing. These activities connect photonics technology to industry while fusion development continues; the published service description does not establish customer identities or revenue.
